Studies on Oral Micro-flora

Abstract
Dental caries originate in acid produced by oral micro-organisms and oral sanitation state etc. Repeated tooth-brushing is understood to eliminate effectively the oral micro-flora and prevent the tooth-decay.
It seemed interesting to study the effects of toothbrusing on the viable number of oral micro-flora. Thus, specimens before and after toothbrushing were taken, gargling, from 55 nursing dormitory students of Seoul National University and cultivated at 37¡É by shaking and pour plate culture methods in thioglycolate agar. After incubation for 48 hours toatal colony count and deep seated colonies, and gram staining were performed.
Results of the studies are summarized as follows:
1. Before toothbrushing 76.5¡­87.3% of the specimens showed over 100000/ml of total viable organisms and after toothbrushing, 71¡­72.8% of the specimens showed less than 90000/ml of total viable organisms.
2. After toothbrushing, the decrease of total viable organisms were less than 90000/m1 among 18.2¡­27.3% of the specimens.
3. Gram staining reactions and bacterial shapes of the colonies were before toothbushing: gram positive cocci 64.7¡­71.4% gram negative cocci 8.9¡­9.4% gram positive bacilli 7.8¡­8.7% gram negative bacilli 11¡­18.1% after toothbrushing gram positive cocci 30¡­46.8%, gram negative cocci 2.4¡­13.4%, gram positive bacilli 14.7¡­18.7% gram negative bacilli 32.1¡­41.9%.
